Robbery

Don't rob others of the opportunity to help you.

Many of us pride ourselves on our independence. We don’t need help. We are self-sufficient. We are the ones who love to help others. We love to give.

Yet, when it’s time to get help from others, we often put our guard up, lower our head down, and keep knocking said head against the wall. We miss a golden opportunity to let others help us, and that’s a shame.

I know that robbery is a strong word. It’s a word that suggests theft or stealing.

I believe that’s exactly what we are doing when we lack the vulnerability to allow others to serve us. We are robbing them of the fulfillment, joy, and overall satisfaction THEY can get from serving us. I know it sounds a bit backward, but I believe it’s the truth.

People love to help others. Many of us experience a great sense of purpose when we can do so.

Think about the last person you helped. How did it make you feel to do so? Now imagine if that person simply didn’t let you help them. Obviously, it impacts them, but it also impacts you.

So, the next time someone asks to help, simply take a moment, pause, and give them the opportunity to do so.
